The Bandana Project Recently, our very own Remigia Sandoval was chosen to speak at the Bandana Project Reception on the subject of working with the farm worker communities. Remigia, or Remy, as we lovingly refer to her as, has been an advocate with Survivors, Inc. since May of 1997. Remy has been instrumental in Survivors Latino Outreach and has served as a necessary part in our serving the needs of the Latino community in the areas of domestic violence and sexual assault. The Bandana Project, launched by Esperanza: The Immigrant Women's Legal Initiative of the Southern Poverty Law Center in June 2007, is a national event aimed at raising awareness about sexual violence and harassment against farm worker women, sparking advocacy and activism in response and creating solidarity and support for farm worker women. Cities across the country are participating, creating bandanas to show support for farm worker women. These bandanas will become a part of the National BANDANA PROJECT and will be displayed in the Southern Poverty Center. Commissioner Stuart J. Ishimaru, US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission was the guest speaker at the reception which was held at the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) in Enola, PA on April 29th. Commissioner Ishimaru spoke about the EEOC's role in defending the rights of employee's rights concerning sexual harassment, pregnancy discrimination and exploitation. He quoted several successful cases of immigrant workers who won a significant lawsuit against their employers. If you would like more information about the Bandana Project you can link onto the NSVRC website at; http://www.nsvrc.org/news/default.aspx?NewsId=117. CLEAN OUT YOUR CLOSETS FOR SURVIVORS INC.
