Safety Planning

Be prepared by having or knowing…

· A safe place to go - like the home of a friend or relative
· Ways to get out - of the house or apartment
· Important phone numbers - like the police, women's shelter, counselor,
  relatives, or friends
· A bag - packed with clothes, money or a checkbook, and important papers
like restraining orders and birth certificates
· Keep the bag in a safe place - such as in the car or with friends
· A support group of friends - who would be willing to help you in an
emergency (transportation, shelter, money, childcare, etc.)

During an attack

· Call 9-1-1 - if possible
· Write down officers' names - and badge numbers in case a record of the
  attack is needed
· Leave the house, take the children
· Seek medical help - for injuries. Injuries may be more serious than they
seem and having a record can help if you decide to press charges.

Long-range planning

· Research agencies, programs or shelters - that offer services to battered
  women
· Join a support group
· Get counseling
· Call the National Domestic Violence Hotline 1-800-799-7233 - to find out
what resources are available in your area.
